heparin-binding protein

AZU1

A gene on chromosome 19q13.3 that encodes an azurophil granule protein of the serine protease family (but is not itself a serine protease), which has monocyte chemotactic and antibacterial activity, and acts as an important multifunctional inflammatory mediator. The genes encoding the AZU1 protein product, neutrophil elastase 2 and proteinase 3, are in a cluster at chromosome 19pter, and all three are expressed and packaged together into azurophil granules during neutrophil differentiation.

heparin-binding protein

A proinflammatory, antimicrobial peptide released by neutrophils. It increases the permeability of blood vessels. It is found in high concentrations in plasma of patients with septic shock. See also: protein
