Guadalupe, Sentencia de
Guadalupe, Sentencia de
an act abolishing the personal dependence of the peasants of Catalonia, issued in 1486 at the monastery of Guadalupe in the region of Estrema-dura by King Ferdinand II of Aragon. The Sentencia de Guadalupe abolished the malos usos (harsh taxes on the peasants) in return for an enormous payment. The promulgation of the Sentencia de Guadalupe was a result of the Catalonian peasant uprisings of 1462–72 and especially 1484–86. (However, the peasants’ demand to be freed without redemption payments was not satisfied.)
