Hanyang was founded during the Sui dynasty (A.D. 581–618). It is linked by bridge with Hankou. Hanyanga former city in China, in Hupeh Province; since 1956, part of the city of Wuhan. Hanyang is an ancient city. In the late second century it became the center of Shahsien district. Between the third and sixth centuries it was called Shihyang, Ch’üyang, and Lingch’ü; in the late sixth century it was named Hanyang. During the Ch’ing dynasty, Hanyang was the district center of Hupeh Province. In January 1853 it was captured by the Taiping rebels. It was one of the centers of the Hsin-hai revolution of 1911–13. From October 1938 through August 1945, Hanyang was occupied by the Japanese. It was liberated from the Kuomintang forces by the People’s Liberation Army of China in May 1949. Hanyang, Han-yang |
