Ginzburg, Il’ia Isaakovich

Born Jan. 13 (25), 1882, in Moscow; died there Apr. 15, 1965. Soviet geochemist and mineralogist; doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences (1943). Honored Scientist and Technologist of the RSFSR (1957).

Ginzburg studied at the Freiberg Mining Academy in Germany from 1902 to 1904; he graduated from the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute in 1913. From 1925 to 1963 he worked in institutions of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR; from 1956 to 1963 he headed the department of exogenous ore deposits of the Institute of the Geology of Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy, and Geochemistry. Ginzburg contributed to the study of ancient weathered crusts. His major works are Kaolin and Its Genesis (1912), Ancient Weathered Crusts on Ultrabasic Rock (parts 1-2, 1946-47, coauthor), and Experiments in Developing Theoretical Bases for Geochemical Methods of Seeking Ores of Non-ferrous and Rare Metals (1957). Ginzburg won the State Prize of the USSR in 1946 and was awarded two orders and medals.
