IliamnaIliamna(ĭlēăm`nə), lake, c.1,000 sq mi (2,590 sq km), 75 mi (121 km) long and up to 22 mi (35 km) wide, SW Alaska, at the base of the Alaska Peninsula; largest lake in Alaska and the second largest freshwater lake wholly within the United States. It is fed by many lakes and streams; the Kvichak River drains it SW into Bristol Bay. The lake is noted for sport fishing. Iliamna, Newhalen, and Kakhonak are the chief lakeside villages.Iliamnathe largest lake in Alaska. Area, about 2,100 sq km. It is of glacial-tectonic origin. The lake is located at the base of the Alaska Peninsula, in the northern spurs of the Aleutian Range. The northern and western shores are low; the southern and eastern shores are high. Iliamna Lake is fed primarily by snow. It discharges through the Kvichak River into Bristol Bay in the Bering Sea. The lake is abundant in fish, particularly salmon. Iliamnaan active volcano in southern Alaska, in the Chigmit Mountains in the northern part of the Aleutian Range. Altitude, 3,075 m. The slopes of Iliamna fall off sharply into the western side of Cook Bay. The area is characterized by alpine meadows and tundra. The summit is covered by snow and glaciers. IliamnaIliamna
