[′graj·ə·wəl ‚fāz] (astrophysics) The second phase of a solar flare, characterized by emission of relatively low-energy (soft) x-radiation which appears soon after the beginning of the impulsive phase, grows in intensity as the impulsive bursts wane, and lasts up to several hours. Also known as thermal phase.
