[¦hed·iŋ ′ō·vər‚hand ′bench ‚meth·əd] (mining engineering) A tunneling method in which the heading is the lower part of the section and is driven at least a round or two in advance of the upper part (bench), which is taken out by overhand excavating. Also known as inverted heading and bench method.
