Guerra Junqueiro, Abílio Manuel di

Born Sept. 17, 1850, in Freixo de Espada à Cinta, Trás-os-Montes Province; died July 7, 1923, in Lisbon. Portuguese poet.

Guerra Junqueiro was a bourgeois democrat and an advocate of constitutional monarchy, but in 1890 he became a republican. A member of the realist movement, he critically evaluated bourgeois society in the cycle of poems The Death of Don Juan (1874) and the collection The Muse at Leisure (1879). He wrote the series of satiric, anticlerical poems The Old Age of the Eternal Father (1885), poems full of republican fervor— Song of Hatred (1890) and The Homeland (1896)—and the cycle of poems The End of the Fatherland (1890), as well as the collection of poems Plain Folk (1892). At the turn of the 20th century Guerra Junqueiro became a religious mystic.
