Athir, Izz Al-Din Abu Al-Hasan Ali IBN Al

 

Born May 12, 1160, in Jazirat ibn-Umar; died 1233 or 1234 in Mosul. Arab historian.

Ibn al-Athir’s main work was The Complete History in 12 volumes. Some of the history (up to 922–23) was a revision of al-Tabari’s History but with additional sources, and the rest (up to 1231) was an independent work. He also wrote a bibliographic dictionary of Muhammad’s disciples and a history of the governors (atabegs) of Mosul. Excerpts of Ibn al-Athir’s works in Russian translation can be found in the writings of N. A. Mednikov and A. E. Krymskii.
