Harder's Glands

optic glands present in nearly all terrestrial (excluding primates and man) and secondary aquatic vertebrates. The fatty secretion released by Harder’s glands wets the anterior surface of the eye, protecting it from desiccation or, in aquatic animals, from the action of water. Harder’s glands were first described by the Swiss anatomist J. Harder in deer (1964).
