Horse Breeding, Institute of

(full name, All-Union Research Institute of Horse Breeding), located in the village of Divovo, Rybnoe Raion, Riazan— Oblast. The institute deals with problems related to the development of horse breeding and stud farming. It coordinates the work done on horse breeding at institutes of livestock raising in several Union and autonomous republics and at regional institutes of agriculture. The Institute of Horse Breeding was founded in Moscow in 1930; it was relocated on an experimental stud farm in 1960.

As of 1972 the institute had divisions of horse raising, feeding, economics, commercial horse breeding, and scientific and technical information. There is a biochemistry laboratory and laboratories for the training and artificial insemination of horses. The institute also manages an experimental stud farm, a plant that manufactures mixed feeds, and installations in Astrakhan Oblast. There are graduate students who attend classes at the institute; the school also offers correspondence courses. Since 1936 the Institute of Horse Breeding has published Trudy (Transactions).
