(legal status). Grandchildren have specific rights and carry legal obligations in relation to paternal and maternal grandparents. Thus, according to Soviet law, minor grandchildren who are needy or adult grandchildren who are unable to work have the right to receive material support (an allowance) from grandparents possessing adequate resources, providing that the grandchildren cannot get support from their parents or spouse. In turn, grandchildren possessing adequate resources are obligated to support grandparents who are needy and cannot work, if they cannot get support from their spouse or children. Grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and grandparents have the right to inherit from each other. Grandchildren or great-grandchildren inherit according to law from their grandfather (or grand-mother) if, at the time of opening the will, the parent who would have been the heir is not alive. In such cases, grand-children inherit the exact share that would legally have been designated as the inheritance of the deceased parent. Paternal and maternal grandparents inherit from grandchildren as second-line heirs.
