13th day of the Islamic month of RajabAli ibn Abu Talib was the cousin and son-in-law of the prophet Muhammad. He ruled the Rashidun Empire from 656 to 661. Due to sectarian differences in Islam, he is known variously as the fourth caliph by Sunni Muslims and the first imam by Shi'ite Muslims.
To pay tribute to Ali's special role in the Shi'ite succession, followers have always honored the anniversary of his birth date.
