[‚hī·pər′rä‚män i‚fekt] (optics) The phenomenon whereby, when light is scattered from an intense laser beam with frequency ν0, the scattered light has components not only with frequency 2ν0 but also with frequencies 2ν0±νm , where νm is the frequency of a transition in the scattering molecules.
