Hortensius, Quintus
(kwĭn`təs hôrtĕn`shəs), 114 B.C.–50 B.C., Roman orator. He was the favorite lawyer of the patrician party and made his name as defense counsel in the bribery and embezzlement trials so frequent in Rome. At one of these trials he defended Caius VerresVerres, Caius, c.120 B.C.–43 B.C., Roman administrator. He held various posts before serving as governor of Sicily (73–71 B.C.). His corruption and extortion were notable even in an era when corruption among Roman governors was taken for granted.
