Location:On the US/Canada border, 36 miles north of the town of Grand Marais on Highway 61.
Facilities:Hiking trails (4 miles), wheelchair-accessible trail (0.75 miles),snowshoe rentals, picnic area, historic site, visitor center (é), interpretiveexhibits, gift shop.

Special Features:A boardwalk trail leads to an overlook of Minnesota's highest waterfalland the steep gorge into which the Pigeon River plunges. The fallspresented a serious obstacle to river travel, so a "carrying place," orportage, was necessary, and American Indians created the ancientnine-mile trail from Lake Superior to bypass the falls. This trailbecame known as "The Grand Portage." The park lies within Grand PortageIndian Reservation and is borderedby Canada on the north and east. Lake Superior is about one mile eastof the park.
