Guiteau, Charles Julius

Guiteau, Charles Julius

(1841–82) assassin; born in Freeport, Ill. He dabbled in law, newspaper work, and preaching. He unreasonably expected to be offered a diplomatic post by the administration of President James Garfield. Failing in this, he shot President Garfield (1881) and called out, "I am a Stalwart and Arthur is president now!" Despite behaving like a madman at his trial, he was found guilty and hanged in 1882.
