Gukovskii, Grigorii Aleksandrovich
Born Apr. 18 (May 1), 1902; died Apr. 2, 1950. Soviet literary scholar.
Gukovskii was born in St. Petersburg. He graduated from the department of social sciences of Petrograd University in 1923. He was a professor at the Universities of Leningrad and Saratov. He headed a group that studied 18th-century Russian literature at Pushkin House (Institute of Russian Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Leningrad). Gukovskii’s works deal with Russian literature of the 18th century, as well as A. S. Pushkin, N. V. Gogol, and the period of transition from romanticism to realism traced through the internal patterns of literary development.
