Healthcare Commission

An independent (non-departmental, arm’s-length body or quango) body/watchdog for healthcare, which was sponsored by the UK Department of Health and created to promote and drive improvement in the quality of public and private healthcare in England and Wales. Its remit was to facilitate improvement of healthcare by ensuring independent assessment of the standards of services provided to patients either by the NHS or privately, and become an authoritative and trusted source of information which would encourage improvement.
The Healthcare Commission (HCC) replaced the Commission for Health Improvement in 2004. In 2009, the HCC itself was one of three UK agencies (the other two were the Commission for Social Care Inspection and the Mental Health Act Commission) absorbed by the Care Quality Commission in March 2009.
