Guliev, Aliovsat Nadzhafguli ogly

Born Aug. 23, 1922, in the village of Kyzylakadzh, Sal’iany Raion; died Nov. 6, 1969, in Baku. Soviet historian. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR (1968). Member of the CPSU since 1944.

Guliev graduated from the University of Azerbaijan in 1944. He was director of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR from 1952 to 1958 and from 1967 until his death. Guliev’s main work was in social and economic history and the history of the working class and the revolutionary movement in Azerbaijan. He participated in writing the three-volume History of Azerbaijan (1958–63), Essays on the History of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan (1963), Essays on the History of Communist Organizations of Transcaucasia (1967), and the second volume of Peoples of the Caucasus (1962), which is part of the series Peoples of the World. Guliev also contributed to Essays on the History of Historical Science in the USSR (1963), and the multivolume History of the USSR (vols. 1–6, 1966–68). He was the author of the first secondary school textbook on Azerbaijani history, The History of Azerbaijan (1964). Guliev was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, as well as medals.
