Grant, James Augustus
Born Apr. 11, 1827, in Nairn. Scotland; died there Feb. 11, 1892. British traveler and officer of the East India Company’s colonial troops.
From 1860 to 1863, Grant took part in J. Speke’s second expedition into Central Africa, which was organized by the
English government. Speke and Grant were the first Europeans to succeed in going around Lake Victoria from its western side; they established that the Nile River originated there.
