Harper, James

(1795–1869) publisher; born in Newton, Long Island, N.Y. In 1817, with his brother John Harper, he established the firm that, with his younger brothers as partners, became Harper & Brothers, one of the world's leading publishing companies. Besides publishing books, the company launched popular magazines, including Harper's Bazaar in 1867, and pioneered in printing technology. Harper also served a one-year term as reform mayor of New York City (1844–45).
