Established: Authorized as a national monument on June 30, 1944; changed to national historical park on May 29, 1963.
Location:Along US 340, 65 miles west of Washington, DC, and Baltimore, Maryland. The site encompasses portions of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Facilities:Rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museums, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities:Hiking, fishing, rock climbing, guided tours.
Special Features:Because of its strategic location at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers, this town changed hands eight times during the Civil War. John Brown's raid took place here in 1859.
