Bensley's neutral gentian orange G stain

A now-obsolete histologic method using gentian violet and orange G to differentiate the cell types in the pancreatic islets. Largely empirical dye methods, such as aldehyde fuchsin, chrome-alum haematoxylin phloxine and phloxine tartrazine methods (for the demonstration and differentiation of pancreatic endocrine cells), and the silver techniques such as those of Grimelius, and Hellerstrom and Hellman, have now been largely superseded by specific immunocytochemical methods for the identification of insulin, glucagon, somatostatin and pancreatic polypeptide within islet cells.
