Harpoon Gun

an instrument used to shoot a harpoon. The basic parts of a harpoon gun are the barrel and cradle, wedge breechblock, two recoil brakes (counterrecoil mechanisms), aiming mechanism (a rotating fork), and sight.

The powder charge that propels the harpoon is placed in a brass case. The harpoon is placed into the barrel end of the gun until it stops against the wad over the powder charge. The cylindrical rod of the harpoon fits into the barrel, and its head with claws and grenade remain outside. Harpoon guns are situated on the forecastle of whaling ships. A harpoon gun has a caliber of 900 mm and weighs approximately 700 kg. It is aimed with a handle on the rotating fork, under which the firing lever is located.
