Gunther, John

(1901–70) author, journalist; born in Chicago. A graduate of the University of Chicago (1922), he worked as a correspondent for the Chicago Daily News and for the National Broadcasting Company. His best-selling book, Inside Europe (1936), was followed by a series of Inside… books, including Inside U.S.A. (1944), combining personal observation with historic documentation. The books sold well, but were criticized for their superficiality. His other books include Death Be Not Proud (1949), a memoir of his young son's death, and A Fragment of Autobiography (1962).
