herpes oesophagitis

An infection of the oesophagus by herpes simplex virus, which is typically seen in immune compromised patients, but which may also affect the immune competent at age extremes.
Clinical findings
Painful swallowing, dysphagia, sticking of boluses of food at the oesophagogastric junction, weight loss, fever, mucosal ulcers.
Diagnosis
Endoscopy, biopsy shows characteristic ground glass nuclear changes.
Management
Acyclovir, famciclovir, valacyclovir.
