Harris, John A.

Harris, John A.

(1920–2008)A British architect instrumental in the development of modern Dubai. He drew the first master plan for the city in 1960, when Dubai had no paved roads and no utility networks, water was carted into town, and communication with the outside world was difficult. Following the discovery of oil there in 1966, a building boom of housing, hospitals, schools, and commercial buildings ensued, and Harris wove together his plan for the old city with its future needs and designed many of these new structures. His firm designed the Dubai World Trade Center—which opened in 1979 and at 40 stories was the tallest building in the region for more than 20 years.
