Iller

 

a river in the southern Federal Republic of Germany, right tributary of the Danube. Length, 163 km; basin area, 2,200 sq km. The river’s source is in the Allg’auer Alps; in its lower reaches it crosses the Bavarian Plateau. The river floods during the summer; there are low waters during the winter. The average annual discharge at the mouth is approximately 70 cu m per sec; the highest flowrate is 1,000 cu m per sec. Timber can be floated down the Iller. Several hydroelectric power plants are located on the river, as are the cities of Sonthofen and Kempten.
