Gusev, Matvei Matveevich

Born Nov. 16 (28), 1826, in Viatka, present-day Kirov; died Apr. 10 (22), 1866, in Berlin. Russian astronomer and one of the pioneers of astrophysics in Russia.

Gusev graduated from the University of Kazan in 1847, and from 1852 he worked at the observatory in Vilnius. He conducted systematic photographic investigations of sun spots. In 1860 he obtained the first corroboration of the elongated form of the moon in the direction of the earth. Gusev’s principal works dealt with astrometry, the proper motion of stars, and meteors.
