Healy, Patrick F.

Healy, Patrick F. (Francis)

(1834–1910) Catholic priest, educator; born in Jones County, Ga. A onetime slave, he was a brother of Bishop James Healy and, like him, was sent north to be educated in freedom; he was ordained a Jesuit (1864) after studying abroad. Besides teaching philosophy at Georgetown College (1866–69), he served (1873–82) as its president, greatly expanding the college through fund-raising. He largely concealed his background from contemporaries.
