Hartley Marsden

Hartley (Edmund) Marsden

(1877–1943) painter; born in Lewiston, Maine. Although he lived in New York City when he was young and studied with William Merritt Chase, he was based in Maine and traveled constantly. He used many styles, admired Albert Pinkham Ryder, and is known for his expressionistic, almost mystical approach, as in Evening Storm, Schoodic, Maine (1923).
