Hartt, C. Fred

Hartt, C. Fred (Charles Frederick)

(1840–78) geologist, paleontologist; born in Frederickton, New Brunswick, Canada. He was an early explorer and collector in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in the early 1860s. The leader of several expeditions to Brazil (1865–66, 1867, 1870), author of The Geology of Brazil (1870), and director of Brazil's Geological Survey (1875–78), he founded geological work in that country, where he died of yellow fever. He taught at Cornell University (1868–78).
