a volcanic island in the Indian Ocean (53°06’ S lat., 73°30’ E long.). An Australian possession, Heard Island has an area of approximately 400 sq km, most of which is occupied by the circular Big Ben Mountain, an extinct volcano that rises to an elevation of approximately 3,000 m. The mountain is covered by glaciers that descend to the sea and break off, leaving precipices 15–30 m high. The island was discovered in 1853 by J. Heard, captain of the American merchant ship Oriental. An Australian scientific research station operated on Heard Island from 1947 to 1955.
