The son of Irish immigrants, he graduated from West Point (1891) and served with distinction in the Spanish-American War. Taken by Gen. Pershing to France in 1917, he became the first American soldier since Stonewall Jackson to lead in combat successively a regiment, brigade, division, and corps. Hines later served a term as army chief of staff (1924–26). |
