See Graves' disease.Graves' ophthalmopathyA severe eye disorder associated with thyroid gland dysfunction affecting mainly women in their 30s and 40s. It is an autoimmune disorder involving a massive cellular and fluid infiltration of the soft tissues of the bony orbit so that the upper eyelids are retracted, the eyeballs protuberant, eye movement limited and parts of the corneas often exposed and liable to drying. Optic nerve compression may lead to visual loss. Surgical decompression of the orbit may be necessary. See also EXOPHTHALMOS and THYROTOXICOSIS. |
