On northern border of FL panhandle, north of Panama City; organized Jan 8, 1848 from Walton and Calhoun counties. Name Origin: For Holmes Creek, which forms the eastern boundary of the county. The creek was named for the valley, which was probably named for a Creek Indian chief, killed (1818) by troops under the command of Andrew Jackson (1767-1845); or possibly for Thomas J. Holmes, a settler from NC about 1830
