Guyots
Guyots
(named after their discoverer, the American geographer and geologist A. Guyot, 1807-84), isolated, flat-topped, underwater volcanic mountains. They are found primarily in the Pacific Ocean in groups or as solitary peaks. There are also solitary guyots in the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Their peaks are located at depths of 200-2,000 m. It is thought that they were leveled by abrasion. Since abrasion is evident only up to depths on the order of 100-200 m, it is suggested that the majority of guyots underwent a subsidence together with the ocean floor that forms their base.
