Hetaeriae

 

(1) Unions, alliances, and groups of citizens in ancient Greece. The term “hetaeriae” designated both officially recognized groups and secret political alliances, mainly oligarchic in nature.

(2) In Greece in the second half of the 18th and the first half of the 19th century, the hetaeriae were secret revolutionary organizations, created for the struggle to liberate the country from the Turkish yoke. One of them known as Philikë Hetairia was nationwide.
