HetaerismenUKHetaerisma term derived from the ancient Greek “hetaera”; misapplied by J. J. Bachofen to denote an original historic form of heterosexual relationships based on indiscriminate sexual intercourse (which in modern science is termed “promiscuity”) and later on group marriage. According to Bachofen’s theory, the next phase after hetaerism was matriarchy. Scholars now use the term “hetaerism” only in reference to the vestiges of group marriage among some ethnic groups. Sacrificial hetaerism refers to certain men’s rights to a woman before she is married. Hospitality hetaerism refers to a guest’s rights to the wife or daughter of the host. |
