Hasakah, al-

a city in northeastern Syria, on the Nahr al- Khabur; capital of the muhafiza (governorate) of al-Hasakah. Population, 33,000 (1970). Al-Hasakah has a railroad station. It is the center of an agricultural region, in which grains, cotton, and livestock are raised. The city has grain elevators and a railroad workshop.
