hypochondriasis, hypochondria

hypochondriasis, hypochondria

A state of constant unjustified conviction of usually serious illness such as heart disease or cancer. The hypochondriac often experiences symptoms that are taken to be manifestations of the feared disease, but still has full insight and is not deluded. The basis of hypochondriasis is unknown. It does not respond to antidepressive treatment. It may be no more than a defect of personality featuring a low fear threshold and an unusually high awareness of the normal functions of the body. Trials conducted between 1997 and 2001 showed that short-term individualized cognitive behaviour therapy can have a long-term beneficial effect in reducing hypochondriacal symptoms.
