Batanagar

a city in India in the state of West Bengal, on the Hooghli River, southwest of Calcutta. It has a railroad station and the largest footwear factory in the country. The footwear factory was founded by the late Czech industrialist Bata, from whom the name Batanagar is derived. Population, 40,600 (1961).
