Ibragim Iusupov

Born May 5, 1929, in the aul of Tagzhap (present-day Kasym Avezov Sovkhoz), Chimbai Raion, Kara-Kalpak ASSR. Soviet Kara-Kalpak poet and dramatist. People’s Poet of Kara-Kalpakia; Honored Art Worker of the Kara-Kalpak ASSR (1965). Member of the CPSU since 1957.

Iusupov graduated from the Kara-Kalpak Pedagogical Institute in 1949, and in the same year he began publishing his works. He is the author of the collections of verse and narrative poems Lyrics of Happiness (1955), Seven Passings (1962), SteppeDreams (1966), and The Course of a Century (1968). He has written such plays as The Actress’s Fate (staged 1967) and The Joker Umirbek (staged 1971). Iusupov’s works deal mainly with contemporary life. He has translated works by A. S. Pushkin, M. Iu. Lermontov, and T. G. Shevchenko. His own works have been translated into many languages. Iusupov has been chairman of the administrative board of the Writers’ Union of Kara-Kalpakia since 1965.
