Ibrahim I

Ibrahim I

Date of birth unknown; died 1417. Azerbaijani statesman, ruler of Shirvan (after 1382), founder of the Derbendi Shirvanshah dynasty.

Taking advantage of the hostile relations between Tamerlane and Tokhtamysh, Ibrahim was able to strengthen Shirvan. He became a vassal of Tamerlane and saved his country from attack. After Tamerlane’s death in 1405, Ibrahim restored Shirvan’s independence and, acting in concert with Georgia, acquired Tabriz for a short time (1406). Later, he and his allies, the king of Kakhetia and the ruler of Sheki, suffered defeat. Shirvan became a vassalage of the state of Kara-Koiunty.
