Established: Authorized on October 27, 1992. The National Park Service manages the designated river in partnership with the State of New Jersey, four counties, and twelve municipalities.
Location:129 miles of the Great Egg Harbor River and its tributaries run through or along the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey, near the urban centers of Philadelphia, Trenton, Camden, and Wilmington.
Activities:Canoeing, kayaking, sailboating, fishing, hiking, birdwatching, and camping.
Special Features:The Great Egg Harbor River has been recognized as the longest canoeable river in the Pinelands National Reserve. The freshwater and tidal wetlands serve as resting, feeding, and breeding areas for waterfowl throughout the year amid undisturbed forests and swamp areas. The river corridor is home to several threatened and endangered species of flora and fauna and is rated one of the top birding spots in North America.
