Hippotraginae

 

a subfamily of the family Bovidae of the order Artiodactyla, which includes the scimitar antelope, other oryxes, and the addax. They are large animals, measuring up to 2 m at the withers and weighing up to 280 kg. Both males and females have long horns (sometimes longer than 1 m), which are straight or curved (arched or U-shaped) with very sharp tips. The ears are long, and the tail is up to 50 cm long, with a tuft of long hairs at the end. The body is covered with short hair, and sometimes there is a short mane. Coloration ranges from off-white or gray to black. Light and dark stripes and spots alternate on the muzzle. The Hippotraginae are found in the deserts and semideserts of Africa and Arabia.
