Haugen, Gilbert (Nelson)

(1859–1933) U.S. representative; born in Rock County, Wis. Son of a Norwegian farmer, Haugen bought land at age 18 and later went into banking. Active in Iowa Republican politics, he served in the state senate before going to the U.S. House of Representatives (1899–1923). Chairman of the Agriculture Committee (1919–31), he sponsored farm relief measures, including the McNary-Haugen bill to send agricultural surpluses abroad.
