To reduce energy costs, new homes have been built to be airtight when doors and windows are closed. But indoor air quality can be compromised by pollutants, moisture, and emissions without sufficient ventilation. Heat-recovery ventilators solve this problem by using a heat exchanger to transfer heat from outgoing heated indoor air to incoming fresh air without mixing the airstreams. The heat-exchange core of a typical HRV is made up of thin aluminum passages with incoming and outgoing airstreams flowing in alternate passages.
