Hot Top

an iron box lined with refractory material or brick; it is placed on a casting mold and insulates the top portion (riser) of a steel ingot. As a result of the reduction of heat loss, the metal remains in the molten state for a longer period. In addition, the shrinkage cavity is located higher in the ingot, which allows a smaller part of the ingot to be cut off before rolling or forging.
